Edward De Bono has said that “The purpose of art is to reflect new emerging values and to define the new heroes and heroines so that people can absorb them into their perceptions.”
What attributes or actions define a hero or heroine? What are your perceptions? From the beginning of time, stories are often told from the perspective of a hero/heroine: be it the epic hero of classical mythology, the moody Byronic Hero, to the wildly popular Superhero.
Everyday people are also capable of acts of great heroism. These heroes/heroines often appear as a parent or family member, to a healthcare worker, teacher, firefighter, or military service member. It’s more common in contemporary media to have a nuanced, imperfect protagonist; even an anti-hero/heroine.
